Amen Avenue

The sign on the fence
behind a friend on a Zoom call
seemed to have an extra “l”
as I felt the need to “Amen!”
her comment. Discussing
the sign when I brought it up,
the two familiar
with central California
near the Chico almond orchards
assured me the “L” is silent.
One commented the mechanical
tree shaking at harvest time
shakes the “L” out of almonds.
I wonder what it would feel like
to live on Amend Avenue.
Amend means to change,
while Amen leaves it free
for God to make changes.
I choose the changes God makes
way ahead of my attempts at change
and I choose today and every day
to reside on Amen Avenue!
