It’s Important

Lines in a poem I wrote about my father:
How many months have I failed to call home?
I don’t tend to make phone calls
even to people I love! That hundred pound phone
we speak of in Recovery is mightily true for me.
But I got a good sponsor after two who
did not work and at her suggestion
I agreed on a schedule to call her.
The best of intentions fell by the way,
and I was late or forgot several times.
She told me she had set the time aside for me.
that if it wasn’t important to me
she had other things to do.
That was eight and a half years ago
and I’ve seldom missed a scheduled call.
The calls are important to me
and I do not leave her waiting
for a call that does not come!
