Want It for Yourself!

I was told that I must want sobriety for my own sake, and I am convinced this is true. There may be many reasons that bring one to A.A. for the first time, but the lasting one must be to want sobriety and the A.A. way of living for oneself. ~ A.A. World Services Inc. Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition. A.A. World Services, Inc.. Kindle Edition.

A people pleaser I may be…except that “may” is a lie…
but doing Recovery for you is a fallacy, a mistake,
misplaced emphasis. If you believe I’m powerless
and I repeat dutifully for your sake, professing
I’m powerless over food — that my life is unmanageable,
so, then, the other Eleven rest on a hollow, fragile foundation
and collapse under the weight. Recovery happens only
when at long last honesty replaces make believe
and I long for honest Recovery and the desire
for it is more important than anything else!
