My Peace

Against the peace and dignity of the state. ~ language in indictments and informations

Every person had his “peace” in the Anglo-Saxon way of thinking,
pretty much the equivalent of somebody’s “space.”
The king had a bigger peace. As early as under Alfred the Great,
English law said something like: “If anyone fights or draws his weapon in the king’s hall,
it shall be for the king to decide whether he shall be put to death or permitted to live,
in case the king is willing to forgive him.” Of course the King had the right to decide where his peace fit.
A king could give individual citizens guaranteed protection from physical harm,
and that protection was giving the person his “peace.” Peace attached to places, too.
It started in the places he owned, but it grew. It attached to crimes that happened on the King’s highway. It got bigger and included the places the king was, such as London and near the other palaces. Gradually, it covered all of England.

The expansion of the king’s peace gave the king the right to make decisions about what happened to people
who violated the king’s peace. That brought courts into national courts rather than regional ones.

I have a peace, as well As long as I hold tight yo my peace, it’s under my control and you cannot violate
it  without my consent.  I call my peace serenity and ask often for it to be maintained.
