The first test of whether we are actually worshipping the right God is fear. That’s right: Fear. While being afraid of all sorts of things is a sign of sanity these days, the fear of God seems quite insane not only to unbelieving neighbors but even in the church. ~ Michael Horton
Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. ~ Luke 12:32.
An archaic definition of fear is,
“a mixed feeling of dread and reverence:
the love and fear of God.”
So, is fear of God good or bad?
Psalm 84 declares,
“Surely his salvation is near
those who fear him,
that his glory may dwell in our land.
the good fear of God dispels the bad fear
of anyone or anything else”
We looked at an archaic definition.
What is a current one?
“an unpleasant emotion
caused by the belief
that someone or something
is dangerous,
likely to cause pain, or a threat.
Is Horton correct in saying,
“the fear of God seems quite insane
not only to unbelieving neighbors
but even in the church.”
So why would it really be wrong to fear God
using any definition?
Is fear of God a troubling neurosis
or a wisdom beyond most people?
First John 4:18 says “There is no fear in love.
But perfect love drives out fear,
because fear has to do with punishment.
The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”
Surely his salvation is near those who fear him,
that his glory may dwell in our land. Psalm 85
