The Chains of Habit

The chains of habit
are too weak to be felt
until they are too strong
to be broken.  ~ Samuel Johnson

I’ve been becoming aware of my habits…
which ones I need to develop,
and which are detrimental…
the issue Paul addressed
in writing to the Romans:
For I do not do the good I want to do,
but the evil I do not want to do —
this I keep on doing.

I’m working on walking six thousand steps a day
and avoiding video games,
on reading material worth learning,
on gradually bringing order from chaos.
I’m trying to automate habits,
to build new ones I wish to keep.
I would have the thoughtless habits
dissolve like shattered chains
and the desirable ones too strong to be broken.
