A Better Person

Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let every new year find you a better man. ~ Benjamin Franklin

Be at war with your vices.
Hating yourself is not being at war
with your vices; not even
hating your life, your addictions,
your habits is being at war
with your vices.
Only reaching the point you know
you’re powerless over your addiction,
that your life is unmanageable
approaches being at war with the vices.
Add coming to believe a Higher Power
could lead you to sanity
and deciding to jump off the bridge,
deciding to let the Higher Power manage
constitutes being at war with your vices.
Being at peace with your beighbors
comes from working the other nine steps,
admitting your part, making amends,
daily being at war with your vices.
And that opens the door to your really, truly
having a happy new year and being
progressively, day-by-day
a better person!
