Where the Dinosaurs Are

We walked in the park today,
Grandmom, Daddy, and three-year-old twins.
We saw a black bird and wanted to pet it
but it flew away. We saw ducks
but we couldn’t throw the rocks in
for them to eat. A rollypolly bug
hurried across our path.
We walked along a trail
and it seemed like a tunnel,
covered over with leafy branches
and we thought that must be
where the dinosaurs were
but we found none.
We walked through life today,
each of us alone but with others
at least part of the time.
We wanted a pat on the back
but others were busy
and not thinking about us.
We got none though we saw beauty,
picked up a tiny flower
we would have missed
had we not been so near the dirt.
We faced a fearsome path
but didn’t find the dragons
we thought might be around the bend.
We faced the day with fear
but didn’t need it. We found peace.
