Not a Lifetime

If I had to do anything for a lifetime
I would never start today.
Oh, if that’s my intention — a lifetime —
I see the advantage, the benefits.
But especially if it’s good for me,
a right step, a new direction, a new course…
I can put it off one more day today.
And tomorrow, and the next tomorrow.
But I also know tomorrow never comes,
and even if I doubt I can do it only tomorrow
I won’t unless I decide to, commit to it.
And when I have that day done,
the next doesn’t intimidate so. I can add a day.
And I can keep on adding them if it’s right,
if it’s good, if it’s healing me or others.
Not for a lifetime. No, never for lifetime.
But for today, each day, I can.
